Wow. That's a challenging bit of history to feel in some ways reponsible for. It's weird to wonder how things could have been different.

I think one of the most amazing things of hearing stories like this is seeing how... real things were. There's a vision we have of what a time was like, but when you hear individual people's stories, it's rarely like that image, and you suddenly realize the realities of people's situations, the things that drove their choices are nothing like you might have imagined.
