Oh, What a Day
Nov. 23rd, 2005 10:24 pmI was off work today. That's a good thing. I had loads of decorating and errands to do. That's a good/neutral thing. The exhaust pipe broke off on the van today as we were only partially done with the errands. That's a bad thing.
stonebender and I had just finished the last of the T-day shopping at the grocery store. We had planned on dropping them off and continuing with our "to do" list. One block from the store we heard a "bang" and then that yucky metal scrapping the road sound. I pulled over, figured out I could not reach the pipe to try to tape it up (I always have duct tape, doncha know) and we mulled over our choices. Drive it the approx. 15 blocks to a gas station down the street from our house or tow it.
We decided to live dangerously. The sound was awful and add to that the constant "tick, tick, tick" of the hazards lights, the blaring horns as drivers passed us and I was on my last nerve when I pulled into the station.
They didn't know if they could fix it today, but they would try. I loaded up the groceries on
stonebender and we walked the 4 or so blocks home. I had resigned myself to not having the van until tomorrow or even Friday. So I did the only thing a totally sleep deprived, depressed over car stuff person would do - I went to bed for a long nap. But that was not to be, the station called and said the van was ready! Yeah, and only $60 to weld it back in place. I was steeling myself for a much larger bill.
I even managed to do one final errand. I picked up
dbubley's birthday present. So it was a real up and down kind of day.
