Smokey outside.  Smell of gunpowder.  Fireworks all around us.  I sat on my front porch and watched them for an hour.  Often I had to tip my head backwards to see them as they soared overhead.    There were colorful ones, loud ones, white zippy ones, sizzling ones.   Some set off car alarms.  Casing fell on our street and sidewalk.

We reassured Gilly and after about 30 minutes of all this noise she mostly ignored them, except for the very loud ones.  Sticking close to us, insisting at one point to get under my desk.  There's not a lot of room there even without my legs, but it's where she wanted to be.

I wonder how many of these backyard pyrotechnicians are putting on the show for children; how many are doing it only for themselves.  Sitting on my front porch, I do believe they are putting it on just for me.

Happy Explosions to All and to All a Good Night!

Poor Gilly. Harlie got the willies many times tonight from all the explosions, of which there were many despite all fireworks being illegal here in Fremont.

I didn't see any big works--too bad.

I went to the BART parking lot on Monday nite and watched the fireworks after the A's game, so I didn't mind missing the show last nite. I had a guest dog over, and both big dogs stayed close, tho they weren't freaked. the old lady couldn't hear the noise, lucky her.

I can understand the home fireworks that make pretty sparkly things. but what's the point of just making a loud boom? the people in my neighborhood had lots of those, unfortunately, but they quieted down by about midnite.

I was thinking about freedom also, and about how people could theoretically do this every night, but they don't; it's so confined to the days around the 4th (and around Chinese New Year). I wonder why.

I was at a big fireworks party, and the people there were doing it for themselves, and the neighborhood children, and whoever happened to come by. I sit in the back away from all flammable objects and watch, myself, but people's delight in actually setting off the big loud ones was palpable.

I thought I heard a few ka-booms from the Coliseum direction on Monday night.

Gilly only barked at the first few and she mostly stayed close to one of us. And when I gave her a few little clam bits off of Guy's plate, she was definitely re-focused!

people could theoretically do this every night, but they don't;

Unless you're at Disneyland or Disney World - fireworks every night! We stayed at a hotel across from Disneyland and our window faced the park, so every night I had to turn off the room lights, pull up a chair and open the drapes.

I love fireworks! When I was young, we never went to the fireworks, but I would go up to the attic and climb out the window, sit on the roof and watch them. It was a pretty good view.
