Looking over a resume today from an early 20 something person, she described herself as an "awesome team player".  The job is not for a sports team or a chic youth oriented clothing store; it's for basic office/data entry work.  Does this make anyone else laugh or am I just out of the loop here?

Which part makes you laugh? "Awesome," seems too informal for a resume, but "team player," would have me voting for 'out of the loop'. Just about every job these days says that they want a team player.

The picture that came to my mind is a cheerleader in costume jumping up and down, knocking over all the paperwork.

I share your amusement. "awesome' has no place on a resume in any context, IMHO. The team player idea may be on MY resume, or at least it might have been somewhere down the line. I think it's phrased more "can work as part of a team or individually" something like that.

If she gets an interview, then I will think that we are out of touch.

The "awesome" mostly makes me think of Christian Rock music: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awesome_God

...or maybe just 80's slang in general: "Awesome, man!"

"Awesome" was the part that made me laugh. I cannot imagine using "awesome" anywhere on a resume unless it was part of the official name of a company you worked for.

Worst - she got the job. It's only a short term data entry job, but never-the-less . . .

"Awesome." Snort! Dude, totally tubular! That's hilarious. She really should have shown her resume to someone a wee bit older.

aw, you guys are just too critical.

lighten up, man!

I do agree it is rather informal for a resume, but nowadays that kind of formality is getting scarce.

and it isn't a make or break for a person hiring, but it might make me look out for someone who may be immature.
