"Officers arrived at the scene and ordered the man to drop the weapon, the police captain said. The man allegedly pointed the weapon at the officers, and they shot him.  The man was taken to the County Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m.  Officers recovered a "replica" of a Beretta firearm from the suspect."

While the police are withholding the name of the man until his family can be notified, I have heard that it may be C, a friend of my good friend, T's.  T is worried sick and we hope this is some bizarre mistake.  She has been calling C's house since she heard and he has not answered.  C is an older man, he had major heart surgery last year and went through quite a bit to get back to living on his own again.  He's a wonderful artist.  We just can't imagine he would wave a weapon, even a replica, at a police office.

I try to concentrate on work, but I find myself going back and googling his name over and over to see if any new reports surface.

I feel like such a girlie girl.  Full make-up complete with body glitter.  I haven't had so much make-up on since I was on stage.  Sexy, bright green, clingy top and black crushed velvet pants.  Fix my hair and I'm out the door.  [profile] dbubley& and I are celebrating our 13 anniversary with dinner and a show.  We'll see Candy Kane tonight at the Big Boogie Nights dance.
loracs: (Gilly)

Dear Gilly Girl,
Ten years ago today you came slip sliding into the world.  It would be another 1 1/2 years before you entered our lives and clawed and toothed your way into our hearts.  It was not easy going.  You were (are) stubborn.  You were confused on where you fit into our family  and until we straighten that out, you were a scary bitch on four legs.  Once that was settled, you became the biggest, silliest, goofiest, most loving, 70lb lap dog ever.

A few weeks ago, as

[personal profile] stonebender and I were going to bed, I started a "hide the tennis ball" game with you.  There was a towel on the bed and I managed to place the ball under it without you seeing me.  For 10 or 15 minutes you searched all over.  You nosed through all the sheets, under the pillows and even under stonebender, but you couldn't find it.  You gave up, sat on the bed and stared at me.  As we continued to get ready for bed, I said "Gilly it's too bad you can't understand me when I say the ball is under the towel above stonebender's head."  You then proceeded immediately to go to the towel, poke your nose under it and retrieve the ball.  The mouths of your two humans fell open.  Good thing there were two of us there, because without confirmation there would be some doubt involved.  Did I really see you do this?  Is he spinning a fish tale?  If only we had caught this all on video, you'd be on You Tube.  From now on, when we don't want you to know something, we will have to spell out the word.  And if you find out you can spell, then we'll have to go to finger spelling.  And if you become fluent in the deaf alphabet, then we'll have to learn another language - maybe Finnish.  And if we find out you're a polyglot, then we'll have to put you outside when we need to talk.  And if you still find out, then our earliest fear will be confirmed - you can read out minds!!!  If only you had thumbs you could control the world.

In human years, you are 53.  In dog years, I am 217.  From one of your old people to you, our middle age doggy, Happy Birthday with a Big Wet Nose and Dry Tongue Kiss and Hugs!  I love you.

Gilly is very toy focused. Gilly loves her tennis ball. Regular game of hide the tennis ball makes her go all sniffy, sniffy around the house until she finds it. Tonight, while she watched, I put the tennis ball in the fridge. A frustrated doggy is fun to watch. I am Evil.

The ball was retrieved from the fridge eventually and now the household is at peace for the night.

I'm off to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow (Wed.), we leave from work around noon. I'm going to see snow - real SNOW! I know this does not thrill many of you, but I haven't been in the snow since Feb. or March of 1982. That was the last winter I spent in Illinois. Many of my co-workers will be skiing, but I'll just be chilling out, enjoying the snow, let the "one armed bandit" take some of money and sleeping. We come back on Saturday afternoon.

Now I have to finish packing. I'm trying real, real hard to get everything in one suitcase because there are 4 of us driving up together in a SUV type Jeep, but a girl has to have choices, so I'm sure I'm over-packing. But maybe not, I don't have any real warm clothes (I live in the Bay Area - who needs them), so I'm taking double socks and a leotard pants to wear under my regular pants, if I'm cold. I also borrowed [livejournal.com profile] dbubley's gloves. I did buy a ski jacket recently, the only real coat I have. I don't have boots, so I'm bringing an extra pair of shoes; if they get wet I can switch pairs and let them dry out.

I really aimed to be in bed by midnight, but now I'll be doing real good if I get there by 1:30 am.

This diploma is not worth the paper it's printed on, unless you can convince someone to hire you on the strength of the typeface. Then it might be worth a six-figure income. Resume checking, it's a good thing.

Another full day of work on very little sleep. Then [livejournal.com profile] stonebender and I went to dinner with the young man who stayed with us for a few weeks last year. He's the son of a college friend. He's established himself in the Bay Area with a job and he's in graduate school. Now he's in love and wanted us to meet her. We were treated to a very nice dinner, lots of talking (3 1/2 hours) and wave after wave of NRE coming off of them. Ahhh, to be that young and that in love.

But now it's 3 am and I have another interview at 10 am for another job I don't want. Again, I have that torn feeling of wanting them to want me, but I don't want them to offer me the position.

Hey [livejournal.com profile] serenejournal, how did you make the ratatouille (not the patouille) last Sunday? I need to bring something to a birthday potluck on Saturday night and I thought I might make that because it was very tasty, I think it will travel well and can be served at room temp. The perfect potluck food.

Wish me luck that I fall asleep quickly. I might actually get 4 hours of sleep, if I'm lucky.

It's very nice out today, bright and warm. So why is it that all I want to do is crawl in a corner and go to sleep. When it's grey, wet and cold outside, I am bright-eyed and bushy tailed. It's not lack of sleep, because I'm pretty consistently sleep deprived. I'm just weird.

A wee bit of language sexism arrived in my email box from my "Dictionary.com Word A Day" subscription. Simply identifying a woman as virago, without any more supporting description would be very confusing. I bet there is no ONE corresponding word to cover both these qualities in a man.

virago \vuh-RAH-go; vuh-RAY-go\, noun:
1. A woman of extraordinary stature, strength, and courage.
2. A woman regarded as loud, scolding, ill-tempered, quarrelsome, or overbearing.

After 2 weeks off, I'm back at work. I still feel crappy. As long as I don't laugh, I can almost pass for normal. Once I laugh, I cough and once I cough, I keep coughing. At least [livejournal.com profile] stonebender is doing better. Went to the doctor yesterday, got a chest xray and there was no sign of pneumonia. He's still not well, but we think we're past the worst of it. Please, please, please, let that be true.

Dbubley and I went to Costco yesterday. At one of the demo tables they were giving out samples of a shrimp wonton soup. One taste and I was hooked. Each little bowl holds 5 lovely shrimp filled wontons. Three minutes in the microwave and it's slurping time. I had one last night and I had one for breakfast. I thought I was going to have these for lunch next week, but at this rate there won't be any left by the time I return to work on Wednesday. Yum, Yum, YUMO.

Hard Night

I seem to be on the other side of this cold, but then stonebender got sick. He was having a lot of problems coughing, as usual and didn't think he could go to bed last night and lay flat. Finally about 3 am we decided to give it a try. Instead of actually laying in bed, we kept him in the sling and attached to the lift. I only reclined him to a point he felt comfortable and was ready to get him upright anytime he felt he might choke. He asked for his bi-pap mask to be put on, hoping it would open us his nasal passages. Until about 6:30 am, we did the dance of down a little, up a little, legs on the bed, legs off the bed, sips of water and repeat. Then he fell asleep. At 10:30 am he woke up and asked for some water and to be lower more. He's actually almost in his regular sleeping position and he's SLEEPING. Blessed normal sleep. With the pneumonia last year he went days without sleeping. The sleep deprivation raised his already high anxiety even higher. I really didn't want him to get to that point again.

At least all of this held off until after our return from Vegas. Stonebender's wheelchair stopped working the 2nd day we were home and I was in the full throes of fever and pain. If both of these had occurred a couple of days earlier, I don't think I could have driven home, let alone push stonebender around the hotel. Good news, it was just his battery and he has a new one and all is well. Now if only we could get our bodies back into a working state so easily.

Big adventure for today was to take a shower and drop stonebender off in Berkeley for a wheelchair repair appointment.  serenejournal was under strict orders from her mom to make me some Jewish penicillin, so I have a wonderful jar of homemade matzo ball soup in the fridge.  First a big glass of cold water and then I'm going back to bed until stonebender calls for a ride home from the BART.

It's Got Me

The creepy crud has me in its throes.  I have a sore throat, achy ears and a nasty cough.  I don't have to go back to work until next Wed., but I had planned all kinds of things.  Today was suppose to be a trip to the Exploratorium with dbubley and dinner in S.F., possibly with some friends.  We also wanted to go to a museum and a movie or two this week.  Now I just feel like staying in bed, which I've mostly done today.  I'm glad I didn't get sick while in Las Vegas, but still I could really do without this now.  Time to heat up some more water for a cup of instant Miso soup.

The Drive

I was very tired on the drive back home and I think that's why it seemed so much longer.  A little stress when the "Check Engine Light Soon" came about 4 hours into the drive, but everything else was fine so we continued.  I think we just hit one of the mileage check points and it wants us to do a major service, which we did before we went on the trip.  Until I remembered this, I was worried and we considered getting a hotel room for the night and deal with the van in the morning.  Luckily, this was not needed and we made it home all safe and sound.

I have lots more thoughts on Vegas and the con, but even after a 5 hour "nap", I'm still a little too bleary to say any more now.  It is 4 am, so it's time for the remainder of my "nap"; I have to get up at 8 am.

Our last day in Vegas, we did some shopping at the Outlet Mall and then went to the Strip.  Lots of walking, lots of photos and then we decided to check out the 1/2 Price Ticket Booth, which was a very long walk - at least for me.  We managed to get tickets to Penn & Teller.  Off to the Rio we ran, ate at their buffet and saw a wonderful show.  Even have pictures of stonebender with Penn and Teller, which he might want to post when we get home.  Of course, first I have to download the bazillion and one photos I have taken in the last few days.

Time for bed, it will be a long day of driving tomorrow.  It will be good to be home, see dbubley, see the Gilly dog and see my own true bed!!!!
