And it's good. I really enjoyed my first Altpoly Con. Since I'm not on the newsgroup I didn't know everyone, maybe about 10 of the 45 people there, but found everyone to be very friendly.

More on our San Diego adventure later - I have to unpack and I'm so tired. 9 hours in a van can do that to a person. Lovely company and easy driving up 5 but tiring nevertheless.

welcome home! yep, San Diego is just that much further away that it can get real long, even on hiway 5. I'm sure Gilly was happy to have the other 2/3 of her family back. how many minutes before you have to go back to work?

and why is it called "alt" poly?

"Alt" is from usenet nomenclature. I haven't been on usenet in several years but as I remember there was divisions like "rec" for recreation, "soc" for social. I'm not sure if "alt" is for alternative or something else. Anyway "altpoly" is the usenet part of the internet that all these weird poly folks hang out including stonebender. And the convention allowed me to meet several of them.

It's been ages for me, and someone may well correct me, but I gather that the "alt" groups have always been somewhat less "official" and that the newgroup procedure may be slightly different. Some groups start as "alt" and then migrate into the other hierarchies. It's not so much "alternative" as it is just the slightly rougher outskirts of the group hierarchy. *shrug* If I were more awake, I could look this up. :)

Incidentally, it was nice meeting you, even if I didn't get a chance to talk much. :) I hope it's okay if I add you to my friends list?
