[profile] dbubley came to work with me today to keep me company.  Once classes are over it becomes very quiet around here.  I said, "come up to my office level."  See, I'm in the basement, but my office is actual up about 4 steps.  They put in a lift for access.  She got in the lift, I closed the door and pushed the button.  Up she started to go and then she didn't - go that is.  It stopped about 1/2 way up.

My first thought was we popped a fuse.  I went to the electrical room and my key wouldn't open it.  In the 2 days I've been gone, they re-keyed that room!  One of our teachers saw me trying to get in and asked me what was wrong.  I explained about the lift and he said "I've got a fireman in my class, I'll get him."  Next thing you know we have 5 fireman crawling all over the lift trying to find a way to let it down.  This is not a pneumatic lift, it's electrical/mechanical.  There didn't seem to be an easy way to do this.  Finally, they managed to get the door open.  It was only about 2 feet off the ground.  [profile] dbubley stood up, they carried her chair out of the lift and then, with a little wooden step thing, they helped her out of the lift and into her chair.

More fun than I should be allowed to have on a Saturday afternoon at work, ya know?

Oh Goodness!

I love that they insisted that you stay with me so that I wouldn't panic. I was listening to an audio book on my nano. I suppose that my first wish should have been to get out of the lift, but I figured it would happen in due time. Mostly I was feeling annoyed that I had to be in the middle of all this and couldn't listen to my book.

Ungrateful? No, not really. Firemen are GREAT to have around when you run into trouble. I was just kind of into the book, and would have been happy to set there until I had to pee. I had no idea how far up the lift had gotten (or rather hadn't hadn't gotten), or I would have suggested doing what was ultimately done right from the beginning. Again, firemen are GREAT to have around. It's about my 4th time being rescued, and each time they have always been polite and extremely competent.

1)Fell in the bathroom at work. Managed to hold on to the sink as I went down. Paramedics came and managed to get me off of the floor and into my chair.
2)Lift on MUNI stopped working at Daly City BART. Firemen lifted my chair off of bus and helped me off and into it.
3)Woke up and immediately rolled over and out of bed onto the floor. After calling Carol for help, getting rug burns and frustration, called the paramedics who came and lifted me right into my chair.
4)Today.

Each time the firemen were polite and helpful. Don't ever hesitate to call if you need them. They have ALWAYS made what could have been a disaster almost(I do mean almost)seem pleasant.

We would have called the elevator repair company and let them figure it out. I'm sure there IS some way to get it down, but it would have been a much longer wait for them. The firemen were there within 10 minutes of the call and it took them less than 30 minutes to figure out what they could and couldn't do and then get her out of there. I knew the elevator company would have taken at least 2 hours to get a crew out there. So [livejournal.com profile] stonebender would have been hanging out a lot longer.

If it was going to break, I'm glad it didn't happen with [livejournal.com profile] stonebender and I guess it's better it happened with my family than with a student. Of course, first choice - that the damn thing would work all the time. It's broken down a few times, just never with a person in it.
