stonebender and I took Gilly to the vet yesterday. She has a hard, red growth around one tooth. Dr. Hack (yes, that's his real name and no, he is not) has been our vet for about 20 years. He is a very calm, gentle man. When he said he wanted Gilly to see a specialist ASAP we knew this wasn't good. It was after 5 pm, so he was unable contact her last night, but first thing this morning we had our referrel and by 3 pm, Gilly was in her office. The did a biopsy and x-rays. It is a cancer, now we're just waiting to hear what kind and what treatment is possible. Unless it is too advance, we will probably have about 1/2 to 3/4 of her jaw removed. Depending on the type, she may need chemo or radiation. Poor baby, it is so sore, esp. after they cut a bit out. She does have some pain pills to help.
No hard dog food for her until this is all settled.
dbubley is more than ready to cook for her. Gilly will have warm buttered rice mixed with cottage cheese for a few days. Doesn't sound very good to me, but she loves it. Then we'll see if we want to buy canned food or continue with homecooking.
This has certainly been a week of reminders how temporary this living stuff is.
