I was mugged this morning on my way to work.  I was about 1/2 block away from the building I work in.  A guy came up behind me on a bicycle and grabbed my purse.  The purse handle and a plastic grocery bag handle were wrapped around my hand, so it did not come off when he pulled.  Instead he pulled me off balance and I fell.  My purse hit his spokes and he went down too.  At this point, I still had hold of my purse and he had released it.  I took a stronger grip on my purse and started to yell "help".  He's cussing at me and saying "you messed up my bike", that almost make me laugh.  He got up and rode off, as a couple of people came to help me.  One was another city employee, who was able to give the cops a better description than I could.  Everything happened so fast.   A fireman name Enrique came by right after this happened.  We'd been in a few city-wide classes together.  He called the police, I answered a few questions on the phone, but then they sent a couple of officers to my office to fill out a report.  I walked into the building, went to the bathroom to clean up and called [personal profile] stonebenderand [profile] dbubley.  By the time I came out, the officers were already looking for me.

The most serious damage is just above my eye on the lid.  It's cut and swollen.  It was bleeding quite a bit for about 10 minutes.  I'm sore on my neck, shoulder and arm on the right side.  This was the side I was carrying the purse on.  I have a few other scraps on my hands.  I don't think I hit the ground with my face, I think I hit his bike frame.  This happened at 8:25 am.  When my boss found out around 10 am, she told me to go home, but by that time

[personal profile] stonebender had already left the house to come and see me.  One of the co-workers got the first aid kit and put stuff on my eye.  She was very sweet.  As the word spread, more people called or stopped by to see how I was.  I finally left about 1:30 pm.  I'm going to take a hot shower, put some ice on my neck and go to sleep for a while.  I have an appointment with my body worker tomorrow at 4:45 pm.

I know I'm lucky I didn't get hurt any worst and that I still have my purse.  I only lost a little blood, skin and dignity.  Overall, I guess I'm also lucky to have lived to 50 years old, and most of those years in a city, and I've never had anything like this happen.   Counting my blessings where I find them.

Yipes! I'm so glad it wasn't worse, and also to hear that other people stepped forward to help. I hope they help make up for the one asshole. (I'd hope you *did* mess up his bike, but he'd probably just steal another).

Speedy healing!

While one part of my brain was freaking and yelling for help, the other part was laughing at the silliness of *him* blaming ME for messing up his bike.

I so understand that the first robbery I went through the phone rang and the robber handed it to me as I was on the floor. It was a guest with a reservation. I actually asked the man with the gun to give me a reservation form. I so wanted to be doing anything other than dealing with a man with a gun at my head! Your mind does weird things.

Wow! I'm sorry this happened, but I'm very glad it wasn't any worse than it was, and it so easily could have been. You take care of yourself, and let others take care of you, too. I know I'd be extremely shaken after something like that, and I'd likely suffer... well... "emotional aftershocks" is the closest I can come to describing it.

Take care, you.

I forced myself to go back to the place a couple of hours later, because the one thing I did loose was my headband. It flew off when I fell. I remember seeing it on the sidewalk, but then when people were helping me up and stuff I forgot to pick it up. It was a little weird emotionally going back. The headband was gone.

I need reminders to take care of myself - I'm not very good at that. Thanks!

Ya after the robberies I stayed at work and finished my shift. Alot of people thought that strange but I knew if I left early I would never go back and at the time that was all I knew.

Thanks. Now, about 14 hours later, I'm finding more bruises, esp. on my hands. Luckily, after icing my neck, it's feeling better.

Eeep! I'm glad that you're okay! Rest up and take bare of the bumps and scratches.

..and while it may be mean [I don't think so], I'm quite pleased that you messed up his bike (in that karmic retribution kind of way that the dude got what he deserved for attempting to do such a thing to such a nice person).

I was bringing dinner down to dbubley when you called. After dinner, I went back to bed for a bit, so I didn't want to call you this late, when I just got up.
Thanks for the hugs!

Good! I would rather you be resting than calling me back. I just wanted to check on you. I was in bed before 9:30 anyway had a rough day myself.

Holy crow!

Bless your heart! I'm so glad you're relatively in one piece - I hope you did mess up the creep's bike! (What a prize he is, eh?) Be well, be happy, and I'm so glad not only that it wasn't worse, but that some folks were nearby to help!

I'm sure tomorrow you'll feel the aches, but blessings, seriously, that it wasn't worse!

With a big hug and every good wish,

Merujo

I do feel lucky over all, but every time I move in a way that hurts, I think of him. Now, I'm totally rethinking carrying a purse, which pisses me off. I don't want to change my behavior because of this jerk.

Ay yi yi! Sorry I couldn't talk longer when I called, but I was at work. I just wanted to hear your voice and make sure you weren't at death's door or something! Can the Munchkin and I bring you anything today? You going to work?

Yeah, I'm going to work. Then my boss and I are leaving early to do a Costco run for a meeting tomorrow morning. After that I going to Berkeley to see Dr. Jim. He's going to check me out. I have lots of sore areas. I will post the picture of my black eye when I have a chance.

dbubley wants to go to work with me this morning to walk me in. I told her I'm okay, I'll probably park somewhere else and at least for today, I'm not going to carry a purse. It's the best I can do to feel okay for now. I made Gilly sleep on my side and with stonebender on the other side, I finally fell asleep about 4 am this morning.

I felt kinda silly being scared at home, in my own bed, but that's when it hit me. I have a feeling you understand. Thanks for the offer, but I think mostly I'm just keeping busy today. Tomorrow will be better . . . right?

OMGoddess!

well, I'm glad I talked to you on the phone, even if I couldn't see and touch you, and you did the absolute best you could have in the situation. I hope the soreness is going away now that it is a few days behind you.

of course you'll feel vulnerable in bed. do you need an additional doberdog? just call Pat, she'll let you borrow one!

hugs from Chicago!
