Gilly

[personal profile] stonebender and I took Gilly to the vet yesterday.  She has a hard, red growth around one tooth.  Dr. Hack (yes, that's his real name and no, he is not) has been our vet for about 20 years.  He is a very calm, gentle man.  When he said he wanted Gilly to see a specialist ASAP we knew this wasn't good.  It was after 5 pm, so he was unable contact her last night, but first thing this morning we had our referrel and by 3 pm, Gilly was in her office.  The did a biopsy and x-rays.  It is a cancer, now we're just waiting to hear what kind and what treatment is possible.  Unless it is too advance, we will probably have about 1/2 to 3/4 of her jaw removed.  Depending on the type, she may need chemo or radiation.  Poor baby, it is so sore, esp. after they cut a bit out.  She does have some pain pills to help.

No hard dog food for her until this is all settled.  [profile] dbubley is more than ready to cook for her.  Gilly will have warm buttered rice mixed with cottage cheese for a few days.  Doesn't sound very good to me, but she loves it.  Then we'll see if we want to buy canned food or continue with homecooking.

This has certainly been a week of reminders how temporary this living stuff is.

My Friend

She has knocked on death's door before.  She has run back to breath another day.  When everything going in and coming out of the body is contained in sterile plastic bags, when breath rushes in and out on the tick tock of a machine, when the body is just plain worn from the inside out, it may be time to knock on that damn door until someone answers.

The doctors don't expect her to leave the hospital this time.  They've said this before.  It's different now.  More and more medical intervention to keep her breathing.  The number of places to get good lines in are rapidly decreasing.  And yet, when I saw her 2 weeks ago, she smiled, enjoyed my bad jokes, communicated in one word whispers, a little sign language, and lots of interpretation from her partner.  We talked of silly things; her adventure in learning to drive a power wheelchair, just before she entered the hospital.  Wheelchair- 1, her mother's antique coffee table - 0.  The fence that "jumped" in front of her, snaring her front wheels until helped arrived.  Future plans to get an accessible van and take road trips with their daughters.

I'm tired for her.  At this moment, I'm too tired to cry.

[livejournal.com profile] stonebender's tummy is making so much noise I can hear it across the room and over the sound of the tv. Either he's singing belly songs to me or we'll be sending out Alien Baby announcements soon!

you have 3 fat girls in a hospital room visiting a fat patient? How about a silly question by a nurses aide, she walks in, talks one look around and asks if we are all sisters. One Mexican-American, one Native American and 2 basic European mutts, believe me none of us look alike. The first to find her voice said "no, we were just all buddies". The aid smiles and said " well you're all sisters in Christ". As she left I said "more like sister's in crisis", after all were were visiting our very sick "sister."

I have 7 more minutes to wish [livejournal.com profile] sogwife a Happy Birthday. Glad your housewarming went so well. It is wonderful to gather friends and family around. Also, very happy to hear your kitty is doing better.
loracs: (Gilly)
At 9 years old she may not be so much a "baby" anymore, but she still has a lot of "puppy energy"! Even with the graying snout, I'm not ready to transition to calling her my "old girl" just yet. What better day then the Ides of March for our "devil dobie" to celebrate her birthday. She had bacon grease on her food this morning. It was a *happy, happy, joy, joy* moment.

In less than 2 hours I will be at the church, decorating and preparing for our fundraiser, "A Taste For Dance". Where has the time gone? I still have to take a shower and I don't know what I'm wearing. Yikes! No time for those fancy cut tag things, if you want to see where I'll be, go to bigmoves.org and the info is there. We have lots of chocolate, including a chocolate fountain. It will be fun. It will be great! Now, if I can just get myself and [livejournal.com profile] dbubley ready and out the door on time, it will be a small miracle.

Happy Anniversary [livejournal.com profile] dbubley!! It's been 12 years today! Let's go get us some chocolate to celebrate!!!

It's just a number, it's just another year. I've not made a big deal of my birthdays in the past - usually dinner and a movie with my partners and a friend or two was the most elaborate celebration. About 6 months ago, I decided I wanted to have a bigger party for this one. Unfortunately, through a series of events starting with [livejournal.com profile] dbubley's hospitalization, the xmas party season and my new job, the prep didn't happen. About 3 weeks ago I started looking for a location and nothing worked out. So I decided to celebrate at the house. I had a small party the night before with my Studio One family (the previous job) and a larger party last night. Making them both a potluck made it a little more relaxing for me. And with the most delightful, delicious, dexterous [livejournal.com profile] serenejournal serving as a hostess, I really did have a chance to just sit back and enjoy the party. Thank you [livejournal.com profile] serenejournal!

At one point, I looked around the room and realized all but one person was on LJ. Granted 4 or 5 people (all not on LJ) had already left, but still it was bit surprising how many there were of "us". And they were, starting with the usual suspects; [livejournal.com profile] stonebender, [livejournal.com profile] dbubley, [livejournal.com profile] serenejournal, [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy, [livejournal.com profile] sogwife, [livejournal.com profile] tracytreefrog,[livejournal.com profile] cassidyrose, [livejournal.com profile] babyfly, and [livejournal.com profile] catzen. I hope I didn't miss anyone.

There was great food, great people, great number of belly laughs; in other words, I had fun and think everyone else did too. Maybe I should start planning for my 60th now? ;-)

What to do?

When it hurts to sit, when it hurts to stand, when it hurts to walk and when it hurts to lay down, where does one put ones body? And don't even suggest any bending over, you'll just make me scream (and not in that good way.)

My back/hip has been like this since Sunday afternoon and I'm really, really, really, ready for it to go away. I have a chiropractor's appointment tomorrow morning. Even though I know it won't just go away after I see her, that doesn't stop me from fantasying that that is exactly what will happen.

I shouldn't have sex with any math brain; if you score more than 200 on math you're out of my league. And you KNOW I plan my life by these tests. ;-)

, you're now logged in!

Below you'll find your test result. After, continue on to your homescreen to discover what we're about.

Your brain: 120% interpersonal, 100% visual, 140% verbal, and 40% mathematical!
Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is. The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each, relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means, conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.

Matching Summary: Each of us has different tastes. Still, I offer the following advice, which I think is obvious:

  1. Don't date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more than 80%.
  2. Don't be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by more than 100%.
  3. Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%.

What I miss about living in the Midwest is the smell of cotton clothes dried for hours outside, hanging in the breeze. The air (of my youth) was fairly clean – no fear the clothes would come in dirtier than they were before being washed. On hot days, I'd practically volunteer to hang the clothes out. The damp slap, and then cling of the wet cloth on my naked arms and face, was delicious. We'd pick them up as the sun went down. Folding them, my arms would burn with the exertion of keeping the large towels off the ground. But it was worth it for the smell. The breeze's breath and the sun’s warmth were bookends to the morning’s cool hanging. The best clothes washing weather was hot mornings and cool evenings. Days later the scent remained as we changed the bed sheets. Climbing in between them soothed transgressions of the day, filling my nose and dreams with an easy order; all was right with the world.

No fabric softener or dryer sheets will ever make me feel that way.

I love the smell of diluted skunk. I inhale deeply as I drive through a sprayed area and I'm sad when the odor is gone. And gas - I love the smell of gas. I know inhaling a bunch of hydrocarbons are not good for the lungs; it says right there on the gas pump. I don't go out of my way to do so, but I do have fill the tank up every so often. Just like with the skunk, I don't want the full blast, but a fine mix of air and stink.

Meatballs & Noodles 2

Tonight I made a mushroom gravy and some ciabatta bread garlic toast. I sauteed mushrooms, sprinkled them with flour and cooked for a couple of minutes. I love the organic soups in a box, esp. for making quick dinners. I added a box of mushroom soup and some water. Added meatballs to warm and the soup thicken.

Here's an example of small, medium and big meatballs. There was plenty of left overs. Yay!

Scallops & Mushrooms 1

We went to Costco this afternoon and after 1 1/2 of shopping and then coming home, dragging in the groceries (not to mention my tired butt) and putting them away, I thought I was too exhausted to cook. But the scallops I bought had thawed, so I decided I needed to make something. Not feeling particularly inspired, I sautéed a bunch of mushrooms in butter, a little oil, garlic and basil. Then I added the giant scallops. When they were cooked, I took a sliced ciabatta roll, dipped it in the pan, and then spooned the mushrooms and scallops over it. YummmoooOO! (Channeling Rachel Ray) Big glass of fresh ice tea and we were happy.

I also bought some dried goji berries. Has anyone tried them? They tout them as the greatest super food EVER, full of all sorts of good antioxidants and stuff. They taste like a cross between cranberries and raisons. I could just eat them out of the bag, but I want to try them in a few things too. I'm thinking an apple salad. Anyone have any good recipes?

A boa constrictor has claimed my chest. Breathing, eating and even swallowing feels tight. Not reality, just a trick of the nerves. It feels real. The muscles are not involved, at least not to the extent they feel. They are slightly spasmish. Not a word, but descriptive never-the-less.

Soup = Love

In this case, I decided to "love myself" and make a big pot a soup with some of my favorite things. This means [livejournal.com profile] stonebender won't be having any. [livejournal.com profile] dbubley probably will. It won't have ALL my favorite things since I don't plan to put rice or pasta in it - it's a "be kind to my diabetes" soup. I don't know how it will turn out because I've never made it before.

Ingredients: 4 chick thighs, a leek, mushrooms, roma tomatoes, cabbage, one box of chicken broth and one box of vegetable broth, frozen peas, zucchini, green pepper, dried hot pepper, garlic powder, dried parsley, basil, salt, pepper and a bay leaf. Water to fill the pot. I've simmered everything, but the zucchini and peas together for about an hour. Now I've added those and will simmer for another 30 or so minutes. I plan to serve with a sprinkle of "cheese de fridge" (either Parmesan, Asiago or Romano) and chopped cilantro cuz everything goes better with cilantro.

Good bread would top it off, but I'm going with saltines because that officially makes it comfort food. That and I don't have any good bread at the moment.

When you need to keep your work clothes clean, breasts, belly and noodle soup do not go together.

I think this is the most number of posts I ever sent in one day.

Now I'm starving and I need to go hunt for food in the "wilds of downtown Oakland."

EDIT: Mmmmmmmm combo soup with clear noodles from the Saigon Restaurant. And plenty of cilantro, hot sauce and jalapenos. Now I'm ready for the last 2.5 hours of my "no work to do" work day.
