9 hours of doing nothing is exhausting!
Dec. 8th, 2005 09:30 pmAt least when it's spent in the ER.
dbubley is home and in bed now. She has a very bad urinary tract infection. But first we had to spend 9 hours waiting, doing something, waiting, waiting and then waiting a little more. She was in excruciating pain much of the time, esp. the first 4 hours - that's how long it took to get seen by a doctor and prescribed some morphine while they waited for urine and blood test to come back. In between, she had to deal with 4 sticks before they got the IV in, 3 tries on the catheter insertion and laying on a very uncomfortable gurney for hours. Not like they make such a thing as a comfortable gurney, esp for fat folks with arthritis in their back. The second hit of morphine was more for the back pain then the original pain. They almost admitted her, but I think they were short on beds, which actually was fine with her. She was not looking forward to a night in the hospital. And it might have been spent on the gurney in the ER. The woman she shared the ER room with for the first hour had been waiting for a hospital room since the night before.
Anyway, I didn't really do anything but read, watch tv, talk some and help her move from wheelchair to gurney a few times. But I feel like I've run a marathon.
Tomorrow will be a very busy day as I try to get everything done for the party on Saturday. I love having my xmas open house and I know it will all come together.

Dec. 8th, 2005 10:49 amBusy morning. So far I've decorated the tree outside with lights and a few ornaments, put up the last of the lights on the front windows and cleaned up and set the table in the back yard. I picked some persimmons and made a little arrangement on the table.
Then a friend and his grandson came to pick some persimmons. I looked out and saw K (who's about 70 yrs old) up on the ladder, leaning to pick the ones on the very top of the tree. When I went out, Gilly slipped out too. For some reason she really didn't like having two men in HER back yard. I've only seen her react like this a couple of times before (and both were directed at men). She barks, bars her teeth, backs away and then moves back towards them again. I don't think she's really attacking, but she is certainly upset. And the barring of the teeth is NOT her regular dobie smile.
Oh, yeah, I'm also waiting to hear from the plumber, who is suppose to come over to fix the sink in the 1/2 bath. I know him well enough that I can always put Gilly in
dbubley's house and leave the back door open for him. And I can leave him a blank check. He's a good friend of
clever_doberman and we've used him before, so I feel fine doing it that way, if I have to.
And
stonebender is going to the movie with
serenejournal's Munchkin The Elder this afternoon.
And today I also need to finally make the rum balls. And run to Coscto. I also wanted to get my hair cut but . . . something might have to go out of this schedule today.
dbubley woke up in lot of pain this morning and blood in her urine. I'm betting it's a kidney infection. She just called Kaiser and they want her in the ER asap, so I'm off to shower and run.

I want to make Rum Balls tonight but I'm so tired. I ground up the almonds and the cookies last night. They, along with the coco powder, are all sitting in a ziplock bag in the fridge. All I have to do is add a few more ingredients and roll them out. That's the hard part. I plan to make over 100 of them and each takes a fair amount of rolling to stay together. Well, maybe just a short nap . . . to be continued . . .
Yep, it's official
Dec. 4th, 2005 05:04 pmI'm certifiable.
This is my newest xmas decoration.
The only thing I can say in my defense is: it's such a cute penguin and I only paid $60 for it at Home Depot.

The Wonders of Flowing Chocolate!
Nov. 29th, 2005 12:02 pmI have my fondue fountain! Yeah!!
On van news: Managed to get the ramp up enough to close the door. That made driving, esp. in the rain, much easier. I'm at work now after doing a Costco run for new shelving we needed in the ceramics department(AND DID I MENTION I BOUGHT MY FONDUE FOUNTAIN?) I have to call Mobility Systems and get an appointment asap. Poor
dbubley had to walk the 1.5 miles to BART this morning in the rain. And she will continue to do this coming and going until the ramp is repaired. Yuck.
I want to go home and melt something.

Nov. 29th, 2005 12:15 amOf reasons why fat people are bankrupting the health care system this would be my #1
(drum roll please)
You have to use needles twice as long when delivering medicine to fat people's muscles!
Okay, the news report didn't say fat folks are putting an undue burden on the health care system because of this, but they certainly implied that our increasing zaftig population has . . . consequences!
The Day After
Nov. 25th, 2005 09:13 amGot up at 7 am so I could continue decorating. I managed to get some more lights up outside but couldn't do the fence because it started raining. Did a few more things inside and now I'm taking a break.
Dinner came out okay yesterday. I think I might have to give up on making a whole turkey. I've tried brining, I've tried breast side down, I've tried high temp and then low temp and probably a few other tips I've read or heard of and it still comes out dry. I've tried cheap turkeys and I've tried the expensive free-range. Various levels of dry, but always dry. The only thing I really look forward to is making turkey soup. One year we were at
stonebender family for a holiday meal and they were going to throw the carcass out. Oh no, they didn't - that "thing of beauty" came home with us.
Everything else came out pretty good. In fact,
dbubley said the pumpkin pie was the best she every tasted. Neither of us likes cloves all that much so I didn't add any, I'm sure there was some in the canned pumpkin. I added the evaporated lactose-free milk, vanilla, powdered ginger, eggs and brown sugar. I didn't follow any one recipe, just picked a few ingredients from various recipes I googled.

Happy "Eat Yourself into a Stupor Day"
Nov. 24th, 2005 11:22 amMade my first pumpkin pie and it looks okay. I made evaporated milk from lactose free milk so
dbubley could enjoy a piece. Next I'm off to stuff the turkey and get that started. It's only a little 8 pound bird so it should cook in 3 - 4 hours. We will eat around 5 pm. Simple dinner of smashed potatoes, cornbread dressing, corn, rolls, gravy and canned cranberry jelly.
stonebender does not believe it's Thanksgiving without the sound of the jelly plopping out of the can. And he actually prefers the taste and texture too.
I think I'll be able to clear the table of xmas decorations so we can use the whole area for dinner. This will be the first time we can do this in over a month.
I might even get a little nap in before dinner.

Oh, What a Day
Nov. 23rd, 2005 10:24 pmI was off work today. That's a good thing. I had loads of decorating and errands to do. That's a good/neutral thing. The exhaust pipe broke off on the van today as we were only partially done with the errands. That's a bad thing.
stonebender and I had just finished the last of the T-day shopping at the grocery store. We had planned on dropping them off and continuing with our "to do" list. One block from the store we heard a "bang" and then that yucky metal scrapping the road sound. I pulled over, figured out I could not reach the pipe to try to tape it up (I always have duct tape, doncha know) and we mulled over our choices. Drive it the approx. 15 blocks to a gas station down the street from our house or tow it.
We decided to live dangerously. The sound was awful and add to that the constant "tick, tick, tick" of the hazards lights, the blaring horns as drivers passed us and I was on my last nerve when I pulled into the station.
They didn't know if they could fix it today, but they would try. I loaded up the groceries on
stonebender and we walked the 4 or so blocks home. I had resigned myself to not having the van until tomorrow or even Friday. So I did the only thing a totally sleep deprived, depressed over car stuff person would do - I went to bed for a long nap. But that was not to be, the station called and said the van was ready! Yeah, and only $60 to weld it back in place. I was steeling myself for a much larger bill.
I even managed to do one final errand. I picked up
dbubley's birthday present. So it was a real up and down kind of day.

Nov. 19th, 2005 09:28 pmI came very close to buying this yesterday at Costco. http://www.buyinflatables.com/productid10662-71.htm
But then I came to my senses!
Chocolate, Chocolate Everywhere
Nov. 19th, 2005 05:27 pmI'm looking at chocolate fountains. I've seen them from $40 to $32,000. Yep that is not a typo - $32,000. Well, it won't be that one but I am considering this one http://www.chocolatefountainsales.com/store/catalog/product_212_Sephra_Select_Home_Chocolate_Fountain__Stainless.html
for $100
or this one http://www.chocolatefountainsales.com/store/catalog/product_210_Sephra_Classic_Home_Chocolate_Fountain__Stainless.html
for a little more ($150).
Why? Cause it looks so cool and at least once a year I think I'd find a use for it. And cause it's a kitchen gadget I don't have. And cause melted chocolate and melted cheese just tickles me. And . . . come on, people give me a few more reasons why I should buy one of these.

From the altfriday5 via
serenejournal:
1. How many hours do you normally sleep at night?
My sleep is very disjointed. I often crash around 9 or 10 pm for a few hours, get up and then don't make it back to bed until 3 am or later. I get up most mornings between 6 am to 7 am.
2. Do you wish you had more time to sleep? Or do you wish that you
slept less?
More time. If I could just get to bed by 11 pm and THEN get up at 6 am I'd feel like I got real sleep.
3. Do you like sleeping?
love it!
4. What is the longest continuous period that you have spent awake? Why
did you do it?
A little over 24 hours. I think that was when
stonebender was in the emergency room a few years ago. 12 of those hours were spent in the hospital.
5. If you were offered the chance to eliminate sleep from your life,
with absolutely no negative physical or psychological side effects, would
you take it? Why or why not? What if this chance was only possible for
you, and not for any of your friends or family, or society at large?
Some days I wish I really could go without sleep. There's never enough hours in the day to get everything done. On the other hand, I would miss dreaming. And maybe I wouldn't get as much done as I think since there would be hours and hours when I couldn't make too much noise and there's only so many 24 hour stores to go to. I guess the answer is no. But I wish that on the sleep I do get I would have "no negative physical or psychological side effects."
Now I must go take a nap - these questions just tuckered me out!

It's Saturday
Nov. 12th, 2005 10:34 amIt's a day I'm suppose to get lots done. I'm in xmas decorating mode. The house is a mess of decorations everywhere. I love it.
But I've also got other stuff to do. Go back to the appliance store and get the adapter for my fridges water filter. I picked up a new filter yesterday. Salesman say's "oh, they've changed the number." I say, "but it's for the same system right." He assures me it is. Now I brought in my old filter just to make sure. And, of course, it doesn't fit when I get home. Checked on-line. Yep, it's the right filter but I need an adapter now. So more than just the number changed. Called this morning, yeah they have it, but now it's another truck out there if I'd like filter water anytime soon. They close at 4 pm today and don't open again until Monday. A girl could die of thirst . . . okay we do have indoor plumbing so I could use the tap water but it doesn't taste as good.
Which brings me to my second problem of the day. I think I'm getting another UTI, which just sucks. This would be my 3rd one in a couple of months. And of course what is the best things to fix/prevent a UTI, yep drinking lots of water. I like water but I just forget to drink it unless I'm doing something that makes me thirsty. And I know that by the time you feel thirsty you are already a little dehydrated. And just to make this "day when I want to accomplish much" a little more irritating - allergies are kicking my butt, okay it's my nose but you get the picture. I'm sneezing, I'm peeing, I've placed glasses of water and boxes of kleenex all over the house. And in between I'm decorating. I took a quick breakfast break while I try to decide how to arrange the Harry Potter ornaments this year. Decisions, decisions!
And a little LJ wasting time thrown in for good measure.
And I really want to stop by a friends birthday party tonight. But first things first, back to Harry.
